Brings in main's 8 commits — #470 (backend-agnostic CI guards: BackendStatus
enum, quiet status(), is_backend_available/is_backend_ready, tests/_backend.py
skip_unless_backend) plus firecracker status() readiness checks (kvm/kernel/
dropbear/mke2fs).
Reconciled #470's additions into the reorg'd backend structure:
* BackendStatus enum + the status(*, quiet=) ABC signature -> backend/base.py
* is_backend_available / is_backend_ready -> backend/selection.py
* exposed all three through the lazy backend facade (__init__).
Integration-test conflicts were our control_plane->orchestrator renames vs
main's skip_unless_docker -> skip_unless_backend swap: kept our refactored
import paths + main's guard. Repointed main's new is_backend_* tests to patch
selection._backends (our moved home) instead of the facade.
pyright: 0 errors. Full unit suite green (2272).

Add a module-level BackendStatus(IntEnum) with READY=0 to replace magic
0 comparisons. Extend BottleBackend.status() with a quiet parameter:
quiet=False (default) prints diagnostics; quiet=True returns the code
silently for programmatic checks.
Add is_backend_available() (cheap PATH check, alias for has_backend) and
is_backend_ready(name, *, quiet=False) (full status() check) to the
backend package for callers that need to distinguish availability from
readiness.
Update tests/_backend.py guards to use is_backend_ready(quiet=False) so
diagnostic output is printed during test discovery, giving the operator a
concrete reason for each skip rather than a bare "prerequisites
unavailable" message.

backend/__init__.py eagerly imported the whole framework (manifest, egress,
git-gate, env, workspace, agent-provider), so importing ANY backend.* submodule
paid ~32 modules just to run the package init. Split it:
- backend/base.py — the abstract contract (BottleSpec, BottlePlan,
BottleCleanupPlan, ExecResult, ActiveAgent, Bottle,
BottleImages, BottleBackend). Carries the framework
imports; loaded only when a caller needs the contract.
- backend/selection.py — backend registry / selection / enumeration
(get_bottle_backend, _get_backends, _auto_select_backend,
has_backend, known_backend_names, enumerate_active_agents).
Concrete backends still imported lazily inside.
- backend/__init__.py — thin: a __getattr__ that resolves the public names
from those submodules on first access (+ a TYPE_CHECKING
block for checkers). Existing `from bot_bottle.backend
import X` and patch.object call-sites keep working.
`import bot_bottle.backend` drops from 32 -> 2 bot_bottle modules. Repointed the
backend-selection test's patch targets to the `selection` module (the functions
reference each other there now; the FirecrackerBottleBackend class-method
patches are unchanged — same class object).
Note: backend.docker.util is still heavy because backend/docker/__init__ eagerly
imports DockerBottleBackend — slimming the three sub-package inits is the
follow-up that makes the leaves cheap.
Full unit suite green (2243).

Give each service its own store package + manager, and cut the supervise module
along the control/data-plane boundary so nothing in the shared layer reaches up
into the orchestrator.
Stores, by owner:
- bot_bottle/store/ keeps only the shared base (DbStore, migrations) and the
concrete stores that aren't service-owned (audit_store, config_store).
- bot_bottle/orchestrator/store/ now houses the orchestrator-owned stores —
queue_store (supervise queue), secret_store, config_store — plus a new
orchestrator store_manager that migrates them (composing audit/config
downward from the base). The old shared store_manager is gone.
Supervise plane, by tier:
- bot_bottle/supervisor/ (NEUTRAL, importable by every tier including the
gateway): types.py (the Proposal/Response/AuditEntry wire types + the tool/
status/poll constants + the shared daemon constants moved out of
supervise.py) and plan.py (SupervisePlan, a pure DTO).
- bot_bottle/orchestrator/supervisor/ (orchestrator-only): queue.py (the
queue/audit I/O wrappers + render_diff + sha256_hex) and supervise.py (the
Supervise lifecycle that stages the DB via the store manager). Its __init__
re-exports the neutral vocabulary so orchestrator-side callers import from
one place.
The gateway now imports only bot_bottle.supervisor.types (never
bot_bottle.supervise), so the data plane holds no code dependency on the
orchestrator — it reaches the queue over the control-plane RPC. This removes
the circular import that moving queue_store under orchestrator introduced
(supervise -> orchestrator -> service -> supervise).
supervise_types.py -> supervisor/types.py; supervise.py deleted (split). Full
unit suite green (2251).

Adds the `nested_containers` bottle flag. On the macOS backend it starts
a rootless podman service inside the bottle and exposes its
Docker-compatible API socket, so the agent still runs `docker` and
`docker compose`. No host daemon socket is mounted and the guest gains
no capabilities; backends that cannot run a guest-local engine reject
the flag in the shared prepare template rather than ignoring it.
Podman rather than rootless Docker because Apple Container's capability
bounding set omits CAP_SYS_ADMIN, which the kernel requires to write a
multi-range uid_map via newuidmap. With no subordinate UID range podman
falls back to a single-UID self-mapping an unprivileged process may
write itself, so the image build strips /etc/subuid and /etc/subgid
entries rather than adding them.
That mapping is also why nested containers are not an isolation layer:
root inside one is the agent user outside it. They are a build/test
convenience; the bottle remains the boundary.
Ports the spike branch onto main, renaming docker_access — it implied
Docker and granted access to nothing on the host — and drops podman
from the derived layer now that every built-in image ships it (#451).

`from __future__ import annotations` already defers all annotation
evaluation, so quoting `str | Path`, `BottleImages` inside the same
module was redundant and tripped pyright strict mode.
Addresses review comments 3098, 3099, 3100 on PR #336:
- Add BottleImages(agent, sidecar) dataclass to backend/__init__.py.
Docker/macOS backends use str image refs; smolmachines uses Path
artifacts. Replaces the singular `image` variable from the canonical
pattern in comment 3100.
- Replace _image_stale_checks/skip_stale with public prelaunch_checks().
CLI now calls backend.prelaunch_checks(plan) before backend.launch(plan);
if StaleImageError is raised and the operator confirms, launch proceeds
without re-checking. Removes the while-True/skip_stale retry loop.
- Add abstract _build_or_load_images(plan) -> BottleImages to
BottleBackend. launch() calls it then passes images to _launch_impl.
Each backend implements both methods.
- Fix comment 3098 (macos-container): _build_images is removed.
build_or_load_images() has separate fresh/cached code paths — the
cached path never calls a build helper.
- Update _start_bundle (smolmachines) to accept sidecar_artifact: Path
directly. Sidecar artifact resolution moves to _sidecar_from_path(),
called by build_or_load_images alongside _agent_from_path().
- image_cache: StaleImageError exception + check_stale/check_stale_path (raise instead of warn)
- BottleBackend.launch: template method (skip_stale flag) that calls _image_stale_checks then _launch_impl
- Each backend: _image_stale_checks delegates to a stale_checks() function in its launch module; _launch_impl replaces launch override
- macos_container: adds image_created_at to util, cached-image support in _build_images, stale_checks
- cli/start.py: catches StaleImageError, prompts interactively, retries with skip_stale=True; headless mode dies on it
_auto_select_backend gains a prompt parameter (default True). When
prompt=False the docker-fallback [i/d/q] menu is skipped and the call
dies immediately with an actionable message ("set
BOT_BOTTLE_BACKEND=docker or install a VM backend"), preventing hangs
in CI, webhook dispatch, and orchestrator launches.
prepare_with_preflight passes prompt=not spec.headless so the headless
start path can never block waiting for TTY input it cannot receive.
Remove the private _read_tty_line duplicate from backend/__init__.py and
the local definition from cli/_common.py. Both now import from the
shared bot_bottle.util module.
- Remove hardcoded --backend=macos-container flag reference in
firecracker/util.py require_firecracker() error message
- Remove --backend flag from cli.py start; backend selection now
driven exclusively by BOT_BOTTLE_BACKEND env var or auto-selection
- Skip unavailable backends in cli.py cleanup (fixes crash on Linux
when macos-container.prepare_cleanup calls require_container())
- Add two-tier auto-selection: VM backend first (macos-container on
macOS, firecracker on Linux+KVM); fall back to docker with a
security warning and interactive i/d/q prompt; exit if docker
also unavailable and print VM install instructions
Closes#344
- Rename _BACKENDS → _backends: pyright treats uppercase module-level
names as constants and flags the reassignment in _get_backends() as
reportConstantRedefinition; lowercase avoids this.
- Add TYPE_CHECKING guard importing CommitCancelled/Freezer/get_freezer
from .freeze: pyright cannot see module-level __getattr__ bindings, so
reportUnsupportedDunderAll fired for those three __all__ entries; the
guard makes them visible to the type checker without running at import
time.
- Update test_backend_selection.py to patch _backends (lowercase).
`undefined-all-variable` fires on CommitCancelled / Freezer / get_freezer
in __all__ because pylint can't see module-level __getattr__ bindings;
`global-statement` fires on the _BACKENDS singleton setter. Both are
intentional patterns — add inline disables rather than suppress globally.
Importing backend.docker.util previously triggered eager loading of all
three backend packages (~76 modules) because backend/__init__.py imported
DockerBottleBackend, FirecrackerBottleBackend, and MacosContainerBottleBackend
at module scope. This made the module prohibitively expensive to import
from the orchestrator layer and elsewhere.
The three backend imports are now deferred into _get_backends(), which
loads all three on first call and caches the result in the module-level
_BACKENDS variable (initially None). Module-level __getattr__ exposes
backend classes and freeze symbols lazily for existing import/patch sites.
backend/docker/util.py raw subprocess.run(["docker", ...]) calls are
replaced with the shared run_docker primitive from docker_cmd, eliminating
the duplication between the backend and orchestrator implementations.
_silent_run() is removed; image_exists() is inlined directly onto
run_docker. The commit_container test is updated to patch run_docker
instead of subprocess.run.
Add BottleBackend.ensure_orchestrator() -> str: the backend-agnostic
entry point that brings up the per-host orchestrator + shared gateway
(idempotent) and returns its host-reachable control-plane URL. Docker
starts the orchestrator + gateway containers (OrchestratorService);
firecracker boots the infra VM; macos-container dies with a pointer
(no orchestrator). Previously bring-up was reachable only through each
backend's consolidated_launch, with no shared handle.
Wire it into `bot-bottle supervise`: supervise is often the first thing
an operator runs, before any bottle has booted the control plane, so
`_resolve_orchestrator_url` now starts the selected backend's
orchestrator on demand when discovery finds nothing, instead of failing
with "launch a bottle first".

Completes the de-sidecar cleanup: no live code, test, current doc,
script, or nix file mentions or is named "sidecar" any more. Only the
dated PRD/research docs keep the term as historical record (agreed on
the #385 thread).
- Rename `sidecar_init.py`→`gateway_init.py` was done earlier; this pass
sweeps the remaining descriptive uses: the egress / git-gate / supervise
components are the gateway's *daemons*, the shared container is the
*gateway*, the old per-bottle container was the *companion container*.
- Rename `tests/integration/test_sidecar_bundle_image.py`→`test_gateway_image.py`
and its class; update `docs/ci.md` + `tests/README.md` for the renamed/
removed integration tests.
- `SIDECAR_PORTS` shell var in `scripts/firecracker-netpool.sh`→`GATEWAY_PORTS`.
Full unit suite green (bar the pre-existing `/bin/sleep`-missing env
errors in test_gateway_init); docker integration — gateway singleton,
broker, real two-bottle multitenant isolation, and the gateway-image
build — all pass.

Add an abstract teardown() classmethod to BottleBackend — the inverse of
setup(), surfaced as `./cli.py backend teardown [--backend=NAME]`
(uninstall). Symmetric with setup: it prints the privileged commands /
declarative config change to remove the host prerequisites.
- firecracker: NixOS-aware — disable the flake module (or drop the
import) and rebuild, or `firecracker-netpool.sh down` imperatively.
- docker / macos-container: nothing to undo (no privileged host state);
print a short note.
Not called by the launch path or the test suite. Extends test_cli_backend
for the new dispatch.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01WBMWTEtQdJ4W5UrWuLHCck
Add abstract `setup()`/`status()` classmethods to BottleBackend (same
per-host, no-instance shape as is_available) so host provisioning is
part of the backend contract, not a per-backend command. Replace the
`./cli.py firecracker {setup,status}` command with a generic
`./cli.py backend {setup,status} [--backend=NAME]` that resolves a
backend (flag / $BOT_BOTTLE_BACKEND / host default) and dispatches —
swapping backends is just a different --backend.
Implementations:
- firecracker: moved out of cli/ into backend/firecracker/setup.py
(network pool module/script + range-overlap check), unchanged output.
- docker: new backend/docker/setup.py — reports docker on PATH, daemon
reachability, and gVisor runsc; setup notes no privileged pool is
needed. Minimal placeholder; richer version tracked in #345.
- macos-container: new setup.py — container CLI + system-service checks.
Also retarget the launch-preflight / isolation-probe pointers to the new
command. New test_cli_backend covers dispatch + docker setup/status.

Delete the smolmachines backend (the whole bot_bottle/backend/smolmachines
package and its tests). It had fatal Linux issues (TSI networking under
sustained use, exec-channel contention, no SIGWINCH) and is superseded by
the Firecracker backend (issue #342).
Backend selection now:
- default is macos-container on macOS, firecracker on KVM-capable Linux
hosts, and docker as the last resort (was smolmachines).
- firecracker is selected on a KVM host even when the `firecracker`
binary isn't installed, so start routes through its preflight and
prints an install pointer (same UX as require_container), instead of
silently falling back. Split is_host_capable() (Linux + KVM) out of
is_available() (adds the binary check) to drive this.
Retarget the cross-backend tests (parity, print-parity, prepare,
workspace, freezer, selection) from smolmachines to firecracker rather
than dropping the coverage. Remove docker.util.image_id/save, which only
smolmachines used. Update README/AGENTS/example bottles and stale
comments; historical docs/prds are left as a point-in-time record.
BREAKING: BOT_BOTTLE_BACKEND=smolmachines now errors as unknown.

Adds a Firecracker-based backend for Linux, providing mature KVM-based
microVM isolation to replace smolmachines/libkrun (issue #342, closes
the dead-end tracked in #332).
Architecture:
- Guest control over SSH (dropbear injected into the rootfs) on a
point-to-point TAP link. `ssh -t` forwards SIGWINCH natively, so no
resize bridge is needed.
- Networking: a one-time, root-provisioned pool of user-owned TAP
devices (no shared bridge → no docker0/virbr0/cni0 collisions) plus a
dedicated `table inet bot_bottle_fc` nftables table (independent of
Docker/ufw/firewalld rules). `./cli.py firecracker setup` prints the
host-appropriate config (NixOS module or sudo script).
- Rootfs: `docker export` → ext4 via `mke2fs -d` (rootless, no mount),
cached by image digest; per-bottle SSH pubkey + IP passed via the
kernel cmdline.
- Sidecar: reuses the Docker bundle, published on the slot's host TAP IP.
- Fail-closed isolation: TAP pool verified at preflight; the egress
boundary is proven empirically post-boot (before the agent runs) by a
canary probe — the VM must fail to reach the host directly, or launch
is refused.
Linux hosts with Firecracker + KVM now default to this backend;
macOS stays on macos-container.
Not yet validated end-to-end on live hardware (requires the one-time
network pool). Unit tests + pyright pass.

When a git-gate repo entry has no host_key configured, the prepare step
now either errors (headless) or fetches the key via ssh-keyscan, shows
it to the operator for confirmation, and optionally persists it to the
bottle config .md file on disk.
Closes#333
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- `bottle:` in agent frontmatter is now optional; agents without it
are portable and require bottles to be selected at launch.
- Adds `filter_multiselect` to `tui.py`: multi-select picker with
ordered selection list, Space/Enter to toggle, Ctrl-D to confirm.
- `ManifestIndex` gains `all_bottle_names` and `load_for_agent` accepts
`bottle_names: tuple[str, ...]` to merge bottles in order at runtime.
- `merge_bottles_runtime` in `manifest_extends.py` applies the same
field-merge rules as `extends:` to pre-resolved bottle objects.
- `BottleSpec` gains `bottle_names`; `_validate` and `write_launch_metadata`
thread it through so `resume` replays the same bottle configuration.
- `cmd_start` shows the bottle multiselect after agent selection,
pre-populated from the agent's `bottle:` field when present.
- Existing agents with `bottle:` declared continue to work unchanged.
Freezer._freeze only ever used bottle.name, which is always
f"bot-bottle-{agent.slug}". Remove the Bottle parameter from
commit() and _freeze(), derive the container name from agent.slug
directly in each subclass, and delete the _NamedBottle stub that
existed solely to paper over this.
Adds a Freezer ABC (backend/freeze.py) that encapsulates the
stop-commit-mark-preserved flow for all backends, following the same
pattern as BottleBackend. Each backend gets its own Freezer subclass:
DockerFreezer — docker commit
MacosContainerFreezer — container export + image rebuild; prompts
to stop if the container is running
SmolmachinesFreezer — smolvm pack create --from-vm
The base class owns write_committed_image, mark_preserved, and the
resume hint. Subclasses implement _freeze() and optionally override
_export_hint() for migration instructions.
Freezer.commit(agent, bottle) is the primary entry point for use
within a live launch context. Freezer.commit_slug(slug) is a
convenience wrapper for cmd_commit, which no longer branches on
backend names itself.
get_freezer(backend_name) is the factory, analogous to
get_bottle_backend(). CommitCancelled is raised by MacosContainerFreezer
when the user declines the stop prompt; cmd_commit catches it and
returns 0.
BottleSpec.manifest was ManifestIndex | Manifest — a union encoding
two lifecycle stages in one field. The union was unjustifiable:
it forced a type-narrowing workaround (loaded_manifest property)
on every consumer.
Clean split:
- BottleSpec.manifest: ManifestIndex (always; CLI-supplied intent)
- BottlePlan.manifest: Manifest (always; loaded by _validate())
_validate() returns the loaded Manifest directly. prepare() passes
it to _resolve_plan(), which stores it on the plan. All provisioner
code now reads plan.manifest.agent / plan.manifest.bottle — no
union, no asserts, no type: ignore.
BottleSpec.manifest is ManifestIndex | Manifest (pre/post _validate()).
Downstream code always runs post-validate so it needs Manifest, but
pyright flagged every .agent/.bottle access. The new loaded_manifest
property asserts isinstance and returns Manifest, giving pyright a
narrowed type without scattering type: ignore everywhere.
Also remove unused Manifest imports from test files and annotate the
_index() helper in test_manifest_agent_git_user.
Manifest now holds exactly one agent and one effective bottle (with
git_user overlay already applied). The old multi-agent/bottle
collection is renamed ManifestIndex. BottleSpec.manifest starts as
ManifestIndex from the CLI and becomes Manifest after _validate()
calls load_for_agent(); all provisioning code downstream reads
spec.manifest.agent / spec.manifest.bottle instead of indexing by name.
Manifest.resolve() now returns an empty-dict manifest with only directory
paths recorded (home_md, cwd_md). No content is read from any .md file
until load_for_agent() is called for a specific agent at preflight.
- Manifest.from_md_dirs: scan-only, no frontmatter parsing
- Manifest.load_for_agent: parses the selected agent file and its bottle
chain; works on eager (from_json_obj) manifests too by returning self
- Manifest.all_agent_names: scans filenames in lazy mode
- backend._validate: calls load_for_agent and propagates upgraded spec
- cli/info.py, cli/list.py, cli/start.py: use load_for_agent / all_agent_names
- manifest_extends.py: reverted to original (no partial-resolve helpers)
- manifest_loader.py: only scan_agent_names + load_bottle_chain_from_dir
- Tests updated to call load_for_agent before accessing agents/bottles;
test_md_agent_repos_deferred renamed to test_md_agent_repos_fails_at_preflight
The git-gate copies the identity file at start time and surfaces a
clear failure then; the pre-launch presence check was redundant.

_validate_git_entries was written for static keys (PRD 0008) and ran
os.path.isfile() on every entry's IdentityFile. gitea-provider repos
(PRD 0047/0048) create their deploy key at provision time, so
IdentityFile is empty at parse — tripping the check with an empty path
("git upstream key file not found for '<name>': "). Gate the host-file
check on the static provider; gitea entries have nothing to verify here.

Drop the parallel fields passed through prepare() → _resolve_plan and
read everything from agent_provision instead. The provider plugin now
declares its own guest_home (so the backend stops hardcoding
"/home/node") and the wrapper that builds the provision plan accepts
instance_name and prompt_file, which providers store on the plan.
DockerBottlePlan and SmolmachinesBottlePlan expose container_name /
machine_name, image / agent_image, dockerfile_path /
agent_dockerfile_path, and prompt_file as properties that delegate to
agent_provision so existing call sites keep working unchanged.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
BottleBackend.prepare was calling resolve_manifest_dockerfile("", spec)
for every bottle where the manifest did not set agent_provider.dockerfile.
That resolves an empty string against user_cwd, returning the cwd
itself — which docker then tried to read as a Dockerfile, giving
"is a directory" errors during image build.
When the manifest doesn't override, use the provider plugin's bundled
Dockerfile path (next to its agent_provider.py module) — mirroring
the pre-refactor behavior.
BottleBackend.prepare computed slug and resolved_env but never passed
them to _resolve_plan. The concrete docker/smolmachines _resolve_plan
methods still had the old (spec, *, stage_dir) signature too, so
prepare's kwargs blew up with "unexpected keyword argument
'instance_name'" the moment cli.py start was invoked.
Update the abstract _resolve_plan signature and both backend
implementations to accept the full kwarg set prepare passes, and
forward to resolve_plan.resolve_plan() with everything.
The recent refactor partially removed workspace planning and
capability-apply logic. This commit finishes the cleanup so the
test suite imports cleanly:
- Comment out workspace_plan field/property on BottlePlan and the
provision_workspace dispatch.
- Comment out workspace usages in docker.util (build_image_with_cwd),
smolmachines.provision.workspace, agent_provider.provision_git,
smolmachines.backend.
- Comment out capability_apply imports in cli.start and cli.supervise;
add a local CapabilityApplyError placeholder so the supervise CLI
module still imports.
- Break the bottle_state → backend.docker → backend circular import
by lazy-loading docker_mod inside bottle_identity, and by moving the
resolve_common import inside BottleBackend.prepare.
- Delete tests for workspace and capability_apply (unit + integration).
- Update test fixtures to drop removed kwargs (container_name_pinned,
derived_image, env_file, workspace_plan, agent_image_ref) from
DockerBottlePlan / SmolmachinesBottlePlan constructors.
- Delete the obsolete test_smolmachines_prepare.py (tested the old
resolve_plan signature; the shared prepare flow now lives in
BottleBackend.prepare).
- Adjust test_supervise.py for the new Supervise.prepare signature
(dockerfile_content arg removed).
925 → 897 tests, all passing.
guest_home is now a field on AgentProvisionPlan (set by each provider's
provision_plan() method). BottlePlan.guest_home becomes a read-only
property delegating to agent_provision.guest_home so existing callers
(provision_git, provision_skills, provision_prompt) are unchanged.
Both resolve_plan.py files drop guest_home from the plan constructor
call; the local variable still exists as an intermediary for the
workspace_plan call that precedes agent_provision_plan.
Chunk 1 (schema + storage): BottleSpec, ActiveAgent, and BottleMetadata
gain label and color fields. Both docker and smolmachines backends
persist them to metadata.json on prepare and surface them in
enumerate_active_agents(). AgentProvider.provision_plan() passes
label/color through to the Claude provider, which injects them into
claude.json so claude-code displays the session name and color in its
header. Codex provider accepts and ignores the knobs.
Chunk 2 (curses modal + display): cmd_start presents a two-step curses
modal — first edit the label (first keystroke replaces the pre-fill),
then optionally pick a color. cli list active renders label with ANSI
escape codes when the terminal supports it, falling back to agent_name
when no label is set.

- Add _load_user_plugin: loads AgentProvider subclass from
~/.bot-bottle/contrib/<name>/agent_provider.py; get_provider()
checks there first before falling back to built-ins
- Add Dockerfile cascade to docker prepare: per-bottle override →
manifest dockerfile → user plugin Dockerfile → provider default
- Move provision_ca and provision_git from backend-specific
provision/ modules to AgentProvider ABC as overridable defaults;
delete docker/provision/ca.py, docker/provision/git.py,
smolmachines/provision/ca.py, smolmachines/provision/git.py
- Add git_gate_insteadof_host/scheme properties to BottlePlan base;
SmolmachinesBottlePlan overrides them to return agent_git_gate_host
and "http" so provision_git works correctly on both backends
- Move SIGKILL retry from smolmachines provision/ca.py into
SmolmachinesBottle.exec via _exec_raw helper — all exec calls
on smolmachines now transparently retry once on exit 137
- Relax manifest_agent template validation to allow user-defined
template names; keep auth_token/forward_host_credentials guards
for built-in-only features
- Update tests: rewrite test_docker_provision_git_user and
test_smolmachines_provision to call provider methods directly;
add TestSmolmachinesBottleExec for SIGKILL retry coverage

rename "pipelock" daemon fixtures to "git-gate" throughout
- Remove test_pipelock_binary_present_and_versioned from integration test
- Remove test_pipelock_answers_on_bundle_ip from smolmachines launch test
- Update _SANDBOX_BLOCK_MARKERS: remove "pipelock" marker (egress blocks)
